The Sautrog icefall offers easy ice climbing combined with walking sections between the ice bulges. Ideal beginner climbing, as the difficulty is quite low, orientation is quite straightforward, and the descent on foot through the forest to the west is steep but manageable. The icefall should only be climbed with sufficient ice formation because thin ice structure presents the danger of breaking through into the watercourse behind. The icefall can only be climbed under avalanche-safe conditions as it is located in a huge avalanche gully!
Author’s recommendation
Another nice, moderately difficult icefall is located west of Gries in the Sellrain valley, the Bafflfall.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Track types
Safety information

Roadbook
Approach:
Leave the parking lot at the last building of the Neder district to the east and follow a wide forest road until you reach the gully of the icefall. You climb up the gully until you establish the backpack depot at about 1,260 m above sea level. Then it is about 30 vertical meters to the ice start.
Route:
The first rope length overcomes the first and second ice bulge until you set up a belay in flatter terrain (1st RL WI3, 50m)
The second rope length leads over very easy ice terrain and walking terrain to the third ice bulge. Here you set up the next belay (2nd RL WI1, 55m).
The third and last rope length leads over the third ice bulge in engaging climbing up to flatter terrain. Here you build an ice anchor in the last good, solid ice (3rd RL WI2+, 55m).
Descent:
Cross to the right (west) out of the gully in the direction of the ascent and enter a steep but well walkable forest section. Descend through this to return to the backpack depot. From the backpack depot, follow the approach track and forest road back to the parking lot.
