Author’s recommendation
The route leads around Altenrath – a place with a lively history: For a long time, Altenrath was a street village strongly influenced by the nearby military training area. Even today, traces such as the former tank wash facility by the roadside remind of this past.
A few meters past the tank wash facility, a small detour is worthwhile: Those who continue straight reach within a few minutes a spot with an open view of Cologne/Bonn Airport grounds – an interesting contrast to the surrounding nature.
For a refreshment on the way, there are two options: the Jägerhof inn, known for its traditional cuisine, and the restaurant “Zur alten Fähre” with a view of the Agger – ideal for a cozy break before continuing.
In front of the little sacred house, you will find a QR code from the DBU Natural Heritage on a trail marker, which provides more information about the sacred house.

Safety information
Nature reserve with a special history
The Wahner Heide is a valuable nature reserve that was partially used for military purposes in the past and is still used by the Bundeswehr today. This results in special rules for staying on site.
Stay only on the approved paths
Please use exclusively the signposted paths marked with red arrows. These paths were selected for reasons of nature conservation as well as danger prevention. Leaving the marked paths is strictly prohibited.
Life-threatening danger due to military remnants
Off the paths there is life-threatening danger due to possible ammunition residues. Do not touch any suspicious objects – they could be dangerous.
Military security area
Do not enter any cordoned-off or appropriately marked military areas. Temporary closures, for example during exercises, must also be strictly observed. Inform yourself in advance about possible closure times of the Wahner Heide military training area.
Consideration for people and nature
Loud music playing is not permitted, as it can disturb especially field birds and other sensitive animal species. With your consideration, you actively contribute to the protection of nature and the safety of all visitors.
