The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle - Forest Gardens Circuit
In the Forest Gardens circuit, visitors experience the diversity of the forest habitat, but also wander through Asian cultivated landscapes and primeval fern worlds.
The circular path through the forest gardens begins immediately to the left after the visitors' bridge. Thanks to Merano's mild climate, an evergreen laurel forest from East Asia thrives here. The pavilion "Ornamental Plants from All Over the World" is reminiscent of the botanical conquests of so-called plant hunters in earlier centuries. In spring, tulips, pomponias and wisteria blossom around the watercourse. Near the exotic bamboo forest, the new greenhouse will open in 2012. In the grotto, a twelve-minute multimedia show takes visitors back to the origins of life on earth. In the fern valley you can discover ancient plants such as ginkgo, primeval mammoth trees, palm and tree ferns as well as numerous fern species, but also the botanical rarity Wollemia nobilis. Passing the Japanese Garden, visitors reach the rice terraces and the tea plantation as examples of Asian cultural landscapes.
