The origins of Schaumburg date back to the early Middle Ages, but it was first mentioned in documents in 1197. From 1850 to 1855, the then owner Stephan Archduke of Austria had Schaumburg transformed into a neo-Gothic castle following the English model. In the process, it gained its distinctive, widely visible towers, including the 42 m high "keep", which in the 19th century was no longer used as the last refuge in the castle. But the castle's owners likely appreciated it as a good viewpoint!
Author’s recommendation
In Balduinstein there are numerous places to stop for refreshments at the end of the route. Picnic benches by the castle invite you to rest - don’t forget your packed lunch.

Landhotel zum Bären – Fine dining in a unique settingTips and suggestions
This circular route can be hiked all year round. In winter, when the trees are bare, even more interesting views of the Lahn valley open up.Roadbook
The Schaumburg Loop starts in Balduinstein. At the church, it immediately goes steeply uphill on the Lahn hiking trail. Past a grotto, the path continues upward into the forest. Beautiful views into the Lahn valley appear repeatedly, but the highlight for "view seekers" is the small shelter called "Saukopp" above a steep slope of the Lahn valley. The route continues through the deciduous forest for a while, then follows its edge at a height until it meets the long-distance hiking trail Flensburg - Genoa and the Kuppeltour. At this point, you leave the Lahn hiking trail and now follow the Kuppeltour – initially to the left down into the valley! From here, Schaumburg guides the hiker like a picturesque landmark in the distance. Reaching it is the next goal! Through the fields, the path leads downhill and along the forest edge approaching the Schaumburg farmstead. Shortly past old chestnut trees and a pond, you can leave the road and climb up a forest path to the castle wall. Over a long staircase, you reach the entrance at the gatehouses, with a beautiful view of the former terraced gardens, where freely accessible resting places are found. From the castle access road, take the path down into the forest and pass an old overgrown quarry before reaching the houses of Balduinstein again.
