Hike in the westernmost part of the folded Jura of Switzerland from St-Cergue via La Dôle to the truly unique border town La Cure.

The more westward the Jura heights lie, the higher they are. La Dôle, at 1677 m, is the second highest Jura peak in Switzerland after Le Tendre (1679 m). Jura peaks are only higher in France (the Crête de la Neige is the highest Jura peak at 1720 m). The hike passes through typical Jura landscapes and pastures. Only the final ascent to La Dôle displays a touch of alpine character. The numerous installations on the summit are debatable. Additionally, a new chairlift on the NW side leads to the summit for ski sport. In return, there is a sensational view of Lake Geneva, the Savoy Alps, and even the Mont Blanc. The Jet d'eau from Geneva was clearly visible despite the hazy weather, which is not well reflected in the photos.

However, unique is the destination La Cure, which lies on the France-Switzerland border and belongs to both countries. Even stranger is the border course within the village itself. It runs partly right through the houses, e.g. through the brasserie or the hotel. One can enter through the door in Switzerland and come out on the other side of the house in France (or vice versa) unhindered. There is no customs control in the inn. But beware, customs officers know this smuggler passage and watch it closely, as the border checkpoint is right next door. The links below provide further information, especially a Switzerland Current contribution by SRF from 19.6.2007.

    Author’s recommendation

Instead of turning left at P. 1235 to La Cure, you can also go straight ahead to La Givrine (a bit shorter but less interesting).

    Roadbook

The path is consistently signposted. You can also skip the shortcut I took between La Barillette and Col de Porte and stay on the hiking trail. The paths are mostly easy and comfortable to walk. Only in a few places should you expect steeper terrain and mountain paths.
