The Bornheim Spring Trail - a journey through time
In the southern part of Bornheim, numerous more or less well-preserved facilities for water supply from different eras can still be found.
Did you know that running tap water has only been available for just over one hundred years, and that until then people had to get the precious water from available springs and streams, and that this only changed when electrical energy and machines were available for water distribution? If not, then simply embark on an exciting journey through the history of water supply from Roman times to today. The Bornheim Homeland and Eifel Association has established the theme hiking trail “Bornheimer Quellenweg” for this. With sturdy footwear, you can get started right away.
The approx. 11 km long circular hiking trail leads to the witnesses of the early history of water supply and the current facilities. Here, the joy of hiking is fascinatingly combined with historical visual instruction.
At eight representative stations, information boards provide details about the objects and their historical backgrounds. Marking signs with a green "Q" on a white background lead to the individual stations. These include the Roman Trajan spring of the Roisdorf mineral spring, a running fountain, spring captations for stately villas, old and new water reservoirs, the Brenig water tower as well as a historic hand pump. The trail passes through the districts of Roisdorf, Botzdorf and Brenig as well as partly over the Ville plateau. Along the way, you will also be rewarded with magnificent views over the Rhenish Bay for the efforts of the climb. Other highlights along the route are the fruit blossom landscape on the Ville plateau, the observation tower “Fietzeks Weitblick”, the nature reserve in the former quartz pit, the Wolf Gorge and the Wolfsburg castle.
For interested citizens, as well as school and kindergarten groups, the Bornheim Homeland and Eifel Association offers guided hikes. Inquiries at www.eifelverein-bornheim.de.
Author’s recommendation
You should have some provisions and drinks in your backpack, as unfortunately there are no more opportunities to stop along the way. Suitable places for picnics are available.
