August Macke in Kandern
From early youth, August Macke (1887 - 1914) regularly spent creative weeks with his sister Auguste, the landlady of the Kronen inn. When later his mother also settled here, Kandern became his second home alongside Bonn.
But it was not only his family that attracted him to Kandern. He valued the small town and its surroundings above all else. "I know no place that has such classic motifs as this wonderful Kandern," he raved in a letter to his later wife Elisabeth.
In Kandern, about 20 oil paintings, numerous drawings, several sketchbooks, and watercolors were created. Important impulses of his artistic development originated from his stays in Kandern.
