The Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows between Weiden and Podersdorf are a valuable wetland habitat as well as a prime bird paradise. With a bit of luck, one can see along the path – or from one of the two observation towers – various waterfowl as well as pheasants, deer, hares, or grass snakes. However, anyone looking for the village of Zitzmannsdorf on the map will not succeed: It is a village that was destroyed in 1529 by the advancing Turks towards Vienna and was never rebuilt.
From the Weiden train station, we walk on the bike path south of the tracks towards Podersdorf. After 500 m, the path turns right, leading away from the railway and past a seasonal snack wagon. We follow the bike path south until, after almost 30 minutes, a dirt road along a small canal leads left. After 10 minutes, a few meters south of a small observation tower, we meet a driveway on which we hike southward through the Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows nature reserve. After nearly 45 minutes from the observation tower, we encounter a dirt road along another small canal, where we turn right to meet the Neusiedler See bike path again at the edge of the reed belt north of the bridge over the Golser Canal (rest area and another snack stand). For the variant, follow the bike path south towards Podersdorf here; otherwise, return north towards Weiden. We re-enter the preservation zone of the national park, pass another small observation tower with rest benches, return to the small canal, and from here
