The starting point of the hike is Gisse. At the exit of Gisse in the direction of St. Johann, we follow hiking trail 32 up to a small paved road with farmhouses (possibility to stop at Großstahlhof). We follow the small road a short distance to the right and then turn left onto hiking trail 23. The path leads us uphill into the forest. After a while, we turn left onto hiking trail 32. We follow the path uphill for a long time. In the upper section the path becomes rocky and shortly before the summit, ropes secure the route up to the summit cross.
The first part of the descent follows the same route until a junction signposted "Rotbachalm." We follow the path to the Alm (rustic, staffed hut with a very nice view).
From the hut, the route goes downhill via signposted paths back.
