From the surroundings of the state capital Klagenfurt, one can see the Wintertalernock far to the northwest. It is especially easy to recognize in spring when its slopes are still deeply covered with snow. This leads us soon to a cart track and immediately after to a road on which we reach the Steringer Alm, 1712 m, also called Steringer Hütte. The forest becomes lighter; we come through open terrain onto the ridge, 1892 m, over which we – sometimes somewhat steeper – ascend to the east summit of the Wintertalernock, 2394 m. The west summit, also called the Styrian summit or Strassburger Spitz, is about 500 m from the east summit. At 2404 m it is slightly higher and, besides a summit cross, bears
