If you have no fear of cows and consider their cheerful bell ringing as the most beautiful music not composed by humans, then you are exactly right on the Schneealpe, which has the largest plateau area of the Vienna Hausberge. During the summer months, the pastures between Kutatschhütte and Amaißbichl are full of these lively ruminants. The hike from the high-altitude Kohlebnerstand parking lot via the alpine village to Windberg, the highest mountain of the group, is easy and just right for a Sunday family outing. If you want to taste cheese and dairy products from the happy cows grazing here, the variant to Lurgbauerhütte, a modern organic alpine dairy and shelter, is recommended.
From the Kohlebnerstand parking lot on the red-marked road into the northeast flank of the Kampl and past the Kampl-Bründl, in wide hairpin bends up to the Holzer-Marterl on the ridge of the Kampl, 1660 m, with a transmission mast. From the southern edge of the Schneealpen plateau, continue on the road north to the emergency shelter Kutatschhütte, 1700 m, slightly above the road. Shortly afterwards, leave the road on the right and on a marked footpath over larch-infused meadows northwards somewhat steeper up to the Brandhöhe, 1758 m, where you reach the road again. Now right down the road to the Kinderböndle and keeping right on a marked path in a northeast direction gently descending to extensive alpine pastures. Past a wayside shrine and over the flat meadow area, the Hausboden, to the Schneealpenhaus, 1788 m, perched on a rock ledge. Down again to the Hausboden and from there turn right to the wide meadow area of the Schneealpe, where numerous grazing animals usually frolic. Across
