On the south side of the Gerlos valley, several high valleys branch off, all suitable for leisurely, obstacle-free excursions. One of these is the Wimmer valley near the village of Gmünd. While the outer area is dominated by alpine pastures, beyond the Grundhütte we witness the solitude of the alpine wasteland between wild mountain ridges. The rough continuation further into the valley is rarely visited, as the Wimmerscharte does not represent an official crossing into the rear Ziller valley, meaning the south side is pathless and unmarked.
From Gmünd, 1204 m, initially with some bends through the forest to the Gatterböden, where the beautiful valley opens up. Past the Eggehtenalm, the wide trail heads into the valley to the Wimmertalalm, 1375 m, where most hikers linger at the snack station. The route continues to the Gründlochalm, 1403 m, at the end of the meadow, crosses the stream once more, and then takes three turns. The impression of the valley gradually becomes more rugged, our path also somewhat rockier, but still gentle in its course. Occasionally a small turn, but mostly straight into the valley we reach over the last threshold the large flat area with the Wimmer Grundhütte, 1685 m, on the left side. It probably serves as a sparse shelter for herders. One could continue on the rough path arbitrarily far into the valley background; the descent in any case is on the same path.

Mark Zahel
