At the cantonal border between Schwyz and Zug, the broad, sprawling Rossberg is one of the first Pre-Alpine ridges above the Central Plateau. It promises a wonderful panoramic hike that can easily compare with the more famous Rigi. Almost at the highest point, the Wildspitz, there is even a guesthouse. However, the Rossberg became particularly well-known due to a natural disaster that occurred on September 2, 1806. At that time, a massive flank of potentially unstable molasse rock slipped and buried the village of Goldau in the valley, along with 457 people. The rupture edge at Gnipen and the debris path along the fall line are still impressively visible today.

Across an extensive pasture slope, you finally reach the ridge height at Halsegg, 1320 m, where there is also a nice little inn. Now westward towards Hinter Gwandelen and with a double loop from the shady to the sunny side, where conglomerates frequently appear. Continue over the scenic Langmatt, then slightly down again and finally on a broad path to the mountain guesthouse, a few meters below the highest point at Wildspitz, 1579 m.A comfortable ridge path leads in 20 minutes to Gnipen, 1566 m, where we are directly above the slide slope of the Goldau landslide. At the cross at the west corner (P. 1532) you can choose: either directly down through the landslide area or continue along the ridge via P. 1383 and P. 1279 to Ochsenboden, then a short right detour and as described to P. 988 at Spitzibüel. Mark Zahel
