Although the Wildgrat just misses the 3000-meter mark, that probably only bothers number enthusiasts. In the northern Geigenkamm, it towers over its surroundings and therefore shines with a fantastic panoramic view, including the Northern Limestone Alps as well as the glaciated areas in the south. And the name is no coincidence, as the Wildgrat forms a rugged rock fortress in a quite harsh environment. Nevertheless, it is one of the rare mountains with a trail on the Geigenkamm – more precisely, there are even two trails, as a route also comes up from the Ötztal side via the Erlanger Hut. Our tour is favored by the Hochzeiger cable car, with the Hochzeiger being crossed after just a few minutes.
In two sections, we ascend from Liss to the mountain station of the Hochzeiger chairlift. Slightly veering right below the summit and quickly proceeding west to the cross on the Hochzeiger, 2560 m. We cross this eastward and continue just below the rugged ridge crest in the steep, grass-covered slope above the Riegetal. The following descent traverse is thus somewhat exposed. At about 2370 m, you meet the lower trail through the Riegetal and next head over a cirque threshold to the Großsee, 2416 m. We now hike straight into the block cirque, ignoring the right turn to the Hoher Gemeindekopf (connection to the Ludwigsburg Hut), and overcome another terrain threshold. At the base of the steeper rock faces, the route clearly goes left and gains a col on the west ridge, approx. 2840 m, with the turn-off for the Hans-Raggl Trail. Finally, the last section, occasionally using hands, goes through steep rocky and boulder terrain up to the Wildgrat, 2971 m. The return route is identical up to

Mark Zahel
