The Bienwald, which is a insider tip for all nature lovers, is also one of the last refuges for wildcats.
From the quaint village of Scheibenhardt on the German-French border, the well-marked circular route leads through the southern part of the Bienwald. Here in the largest contiguous forest area in the Upper Rhine Plain, around 45-60 wildcats roam. With a bit of luck, you might spot one of the shy animals. After the first third of the hike, you reach the village of Büchelberg. Like an oasis, the village is situated with its meadows and orchard fields in the middle of the forest. Afterwards, the path follows a forest trail along the Aschbach through one of the most beautiful and original areas of the Bienwald. At the end, you reach the White Cross, which commemorates an event from the year 1838. The Schaidt gamekeeper Johann Wilhelm Alwens (1787-1854) was attacked by poachers at this spot. They threatened to "hang" him on an oak tree. Upon his earnest plea, the poachers let him go. Out of gratitude, he carved a cross into the bark of the oak trunk.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Fire & Smoking - Making fires, smoking, and grilling are strictly forbidden in the forest and must absolutely be avoided! Fires and thus large damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
- Be considerate on the move - Always behave considerately, kindly, and respectfully towards everyone you meet on the way
- Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest, so as not to disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
- Picnic & Waste - Remember a garbage bag for on the way and take your trash home again. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Leash dogs - Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Safety information
Hiking on natural paths and trails - Especially in autumn, pay attention that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall or branches can drop afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can be muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you think certain path sections are impassable for you, you should bypass them. Despite the "non-lost" marking of the premium hiking trails, we always recommend carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency. Path closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Danger situations - In case of an emergency, quick help is needed. And although mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often fastest. These are located in places easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you call for help. This way rescuers know where to find you.

Roadbook
From the center of Scheibenhardt (main street) we follow the marking through Maxstraße and Seufzerallee and turn right into the forest before the customs house. In the forest, you follow a forest track for about 2 km fairly straight, then turn right, then left, and right again towards Büchelberg. Now it goes slightly uphill out of the forest. We walk through the meadows and orchard fields into the village. Turn left into Turmstraße. Up to the forest, we pass some boards that clearly provide information about the species-rich habitat "orchard meadow." After a short stretch on a wide path through the forest, we turn left at the Aschbach onto an idyllic forest path. We follow this until we reach the "White Cross."
There we cross the district road and continue on a path towards the Bienwaldmühle forest inn. About 400 m before the Bienwaldmühle, we turn left heading east. A detour to the forest inn is worthwhile to refresh yourself with a Palatinate specialty or with coffee and cake for the last stretch.
The last stretch goes back to Scheibenhardt on well-developed forest paths.
