A challenging steep ascent along the Kahlmäuer cliff face

The Kahlmäuer on the northwest side of the Rax are among the most impressive cliff formations in this plateau mountain range. The partially secured rock trails there are challenging and arduous not so much because of their difficulty, but rather due to their length and the elevation gain involved. The Wildfährte, an old hunting trail through the central part of the rock face, follows a sloping ledge system that, like a ladder to the heavens, leads to the Karl-Ludwig-Haus, located on the southeastern edge of the plateau. Combined with the descent via the Gamsecksteig—which is also secured—this makes for a loop recommended for average hikers, which includes the ascent of the highest peak in the Rax massif, the 2,007-meter-high Heukuppe.

From the parking lot in Hinternaßwald, walk a few meters along the village road to a fork. Turn left onto the red-marked, gravel farm road (Trail No. 44)—closed to traffic—through the wooded Reißtal valley, later through the short Reißtalklamm gorge to the material cable car’s valley station, 852 m, near the Habsburghaus, where the road ends. Now follow a footpath on the left side of the valley through the forest, climbing steeply uphill to a crossing farm road, and continue through the forest toward the southeast up to the Rehboden junction, 1,040 m, at the base of the Kahlmäuer. Turn right and follow the red-marked trail (“Wildfährte”) up the rocky Bärenlochklamm gorge, flanked by high rock faces and winding in hairpin turns; later, ascend along the right edge of the small valley to just below the smooth, slightly overhanging Bärenlochwand, which blocks off the valley to the south. Opposite the wide “Große Rieß” gravel gully descending from the plateau, climb somewhat laboriously to
