You don’t always have to go far to see far. The Wasserklotz is actually an inconspicuous elevation of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge. If you start on the forest road to the Dörflmoaralm and try to spot the summit cross on the wide alpine meadows, you will despair. When you finally stand at the small wrought-iron summit cross and turn around, you are overwhelmed by how far the view reaches. No "disturbing" elevations block the way. The view extends westward to the Großer Priel, Spitzmauer, and the Sengsengebirge with its highest peak, the Hohe Nock. To the south, you can see the imposing Haller Mauern with the Großer and Kleiner Pyhrgas, and to the east, under good conditions, you can see as far as the Gesäuse.

    Safety information

This is a simple hike / crossing, suitable for children as well. From the Ahornsattel and especially near the summit area, sure-footedness is required. Caution when wet in the summit area. The terrain is rocky and covered with leaves and grass, which can be tricky at times.

    Tips and suggestions

The time indications under the point "duration" refer to the entire hike including ascent and descent, but without breaks.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot at the Jausenstation Zickerreith, a beautiful wide forest road leads into the Kreuzau (a large open meadow area). All side paths are ignored. Continue always northwards to the Dörflmoaralm. At the first stone hut, a wide grassy path branches off to the right, leading east to the Ahornsattel. Upon arrival, you see the north flank of the Wasserklotz on the right. This is ignored. Keep straight ahead over a wide flat meadow area and head towards a clearly visible trail. From here, the trail ascends in several switchbacks, fairly steeply on the left side of a stream gorge. Beautiful views open up repeatedly to the southeast over the Eisenwurzen Nature Park. The last meters to the summit require attention due to somewhat sloping and slippery terrain when wet. The beautiful small wrought-iron summit cross is only seen at the last moment.

The return route initially heads south (crossing the summit). You walk along a narrow rocky trail (also be careful when wet) to a saddle. There, follow the signs down to the right for “Ahornsattel via north flank” and take this trail through beautiful deciduous forest down to the flat ground of the Ahornsattel. From here, return via the known forest road past the Dörflmoaralm and the Kreuzau back to the starting point at Zickerreith.
