Wasigenstein - where Walther once fought Gunther
Varied circular tour along the German-French border with scenic rock towers, memorials, and two typical castles clinging to rocks, inviting careful climbing.
We begin the tour at the first bus stop (Arnsbourg) of Obersteinbach and hike the Rue Principale through the elongated linear village westward uphill. At the third street turning right after the Hotel Au Wachtfels, we turn half-right into Rue du Schangenbach and follow the red ring and the black castle symbol. The path leads into the idyllic Schangenbach valley where, after entering the forest, we turn left. After crossing a meadow, we head towards the forest and soon stand at the Windsteinerfels crossroads before two impressive sandstone monoliths. We keep right at the first rock and follow the marking onto an extremely steep path that runs directly along the German-French border. At the left curve after the rock, at the beginning of the path, a overgrown but less steep path leads uphill to the right. After a short and strenuous climb, we reach the Bayrisch Windstein. The name of the rock goes back to the time when the Palatinate still belonged to Bavaria. A border stone from 1826

Albrecht Ritter
