A wandering dune in the middle of the forest? How can that be? On the family-friendly Wandering Dunes Path near Stixe, you can get to the bottom of this question. The dune landscape of the Elbtalaue is geologically still very young. The glacial valley of the Elbe was formed by glaciers of the last ice age about 12,000 years ago. It left extensive sand and gravel fields in northern Germany. The result was a storm-shaped dune landscape, which today is mostly covered by extensive coniferous forests. In Stixe, the sand reaches up to the crowns of the pine trees. On the trail is also the Laaver Moor, a varied, small-scale cut-over raised bog. Raised bogs are unique landscape features characterized by an almost constant excess of water, which is why they are also called rainwater moors. They consist of shallow depressions blown out by the wind down to a water-impermeable layer. Let yourself be surprised by moors and dunes in the middle of the forest!

The wandering dune provides a habitat for endangered bird species such as the woodlark, the nocturnal nightjar, and many other animal species!

The hike begins at the parking lot on the B195 north of the outskirts of Stixe and leads directly to the Stixe wandering dune. It is one of the last wandering dunes in the Elbe floodplain, which was already placed under protection in 1977. At the fork in the path, choose the right path. Then it goes to the largest intact remaining raised bog in the Elbe floodplain, the Laaver Moor. At the end of the path, turn left and soon reach the small settlement of Neu Zeetze and a hiking parking lot in the middle of a forest. On Heidkruger Weg, take the left path; from here, it goes back through the forest towards Stixe. Once again, you pass the Stixe wandering dune before reaching the parking lot again.

There is a shortcut on the route. It is marked with a white triangle on a red background.
