Wanderfit - Leininger Castle Trail (eastern loop)
In the Middle Ages, the Palatinate was the center of European history. An important ruling dynasty was the Counts of Leininger. The Leininger Castle Trail runs between the testimonies of their rule, linking the ancestral castle of the Counts of Leininger, Altleiningen Castle, with the castles Neuleiningen and Battenberg. The Leininger Castle Trail can be started from any of the three castles. A beautiful, shorter loop is offered by the eastern loop of the path: The idyllic castle village of Neuleiningen, the fertile heights at Nackterhof, wonderful views, and extensive forest areas offer an exciting and varied hike through the northernmost tip of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve.
Health tip:
The beautiful views on this hike are ideal for giving your eyes a treat. Looking into the distance relaxes our eye muscles and helps them recover from the stress of too long and intense close-up viewing, for example, at the computer. Here you can find more tips on this topic.

From the romantic village of Neuleiningen, the path (trail marking "black castle on a yellow background") leads you above the Eckbach valley with magnificent views into the depths and distances in the direction of Nackterhof. At Sommerberg, you encounter a newly created path that idyllically runs through the hillside.
Shortly thereafter, you follow a former vineyard path down into the Specht valley (marking "red castle on a yellow background") and then on shaded forest paths on the opposite side back up to Mittelberg until the path meets the Palatinate Wine Trail (marking "black castle on a yellow background") again. This further leads past a magnificent view of Donnersberg and lovely vineyards into the village of Battenberg.
A detour to the Battenberg castle ruins is worthwhile, from which you have a wide view over the Rhine plain. You can enjoy refreshments at the castle's estate tavern. Opening hours: Wednesday to Friday from 4 p.m., Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from noon. Also interesting is the side path to the “lightning tubes,” a geological peculiarity.
Along the northern edge of the Haardt, the Leininger Castle Trail then leads down to Kleinkarlbach and back to the starting point at Neuleiningen Castle. In one of the many excellent inns, you can enjoy the regional delicacies of the Leiningerland to conclude the hike.
