A route through the Felsenberg-Berntal nature reserve with limestone cliffs and rich animal and plant life, the vineyards, the transition into the forest, and Leistadt.
On this route especially suitable for families, you will walk through the Berntal nature reserve, above which rises a band of limestone rocks formed millions of years ago when the region was covered by tropical seas with coral reefs. The cavities were formerly used by bears as shelter, hence the name "Berntal". Here, amid idyllic vineyards, old fruit trees, and lush vegetation, many rare inhabitants can be discovered (rare birds such as yellowhammer, woodlark, and wheatear, as well as a great variety of insects). Please do not leave the paths. After Berntal, enjoy the view over the Rhine plain and walk through the wine village of Leistadt, which carries the slogan "Closest to the sun", before you dive into the charming transitional landscape of vineyards and forest. A special feature is the weekend house area “Rotsteig”, with small paradises in the form of houses with beautifully landscaped gardens.
Health tip: Clothing with UV protection
Summer time is sun time. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you now need the right UV protection. An ideal complement to sunscreen is clothing with certified UV protection, especially for people with sensitive skin. Textiles generally absorb part of the UV radiation. But the denser and darker the material, the better it protects against UV rays. Normal sportswear, for example, lets through up to 30 percent of UV rays. That is quite a lot, especially if you are out on a route for longer periods.
