With the Wanderbares Lutherland, the core pieces of the Reformation are traversed and experienced personally.
The route begins where the great era of the Reformation ended – in Schmalkalden. With the Schmalkaldic League, the place earned the fame 500 years ago to be named in the same breath as Rome and Jerusalem. The route runs geographically opposite to the chronological sequence from that time. The Schmalkaldic Diet of 1537 was the peak of the Protestant military alliance, where the hike with the so-called "Little Luther" begins in the St. George Church in Schmalkalden. Then it goes up to Brotterode, where there is a rest at the Hotel Berggarten. The Lutherweg then climbs up to the Rennsteig at Dreiherrnstein. From there, the path leads down to the Luther valley with the site of Martin Luther's kidnapping on May 4, 1521, and across the famous Altenstein Castle park into the Moorgrund to Luther's birthplace Möhra, from where the pregnant Margarethe Luther moved with her family to Mansfeld in 1483. The route ends again at a St. George Church after 42 km, this time in the world champion city of Gumpelstadt.
