Walliser Sonnenweg Stage 2: Leukerbad – Gampel
The many thermal springs that bubble cheerfully in Leukerbad are at least as impressive as the location of the place at the foot of steep rock faces. The backdrop with Gemmiwand and Daubenhorn already impressed Mark Twain, who once hiked over the Gemmi to Leukerbad, and in 1779 the young Goethe on his Swiss journey. The Walliser Sonnenweg leads out of Leukerbad towards Albinen. Soon the Albinen ladders are reached. They are probably one of the oldest connections between the two villages. Eight ladders overcome some steep steps and an altitude difference of 100 meters. The ladders can also be bypassed on a hiking trail. The village of Albinen, listed in the «Inventory of protected villagescapes of national significance», impresses with its hillside location and, like the municipalities Guttet-Feschel, Erschmatt, and Jeizinen, has preserved much of its originality.
