The Lägern is considered the easternmost outlier of the Jura Mountains, and its crossing marks the beginning of the Jura Ridgeway from Dielsdorf to Lake Geneva. Only very few of the countless hikers who flock to the rocky and sometimes narrow Lägern ridge on sunny days are aware of the mysterious Walhalla Cave, which lies just a few meters down on the south slope. Originally just a rock crevice, it was expanded and furnished from 1920 by four young men from Wettingen. They are immortalized on the commemorative plaque with their artist names Mars, Minerva, Venus, and Aeolus. The cave itself is unspectacular; however, the path to it and the view from the small forecourt are all the more delightful.
We start the ascent to Walhalla and the Lägern ridge in Wettingen at the church of St. Sebastian. Heading northeast, we march along residential streets towards the vineyards and enter the forest at the Mooshalde barbecue area (parking lot). The forest road is soon shortened by a narrow footpath. Back on a wide path to a small quarry with a shelter (P. 595). About 200 meters later, we leave the marked route to the left onto a path that continues to rise, crosses a logging track, and reaches a fire site. From here, we can already see the first fixed rope. It marks the partly rooty, partly rocky steep path up to Walhalla. Fixed ropes provide grip repeatedly and assist over the most difficult sections. Finally, up a short ladder to the cave entrance (table, benches, cave logbook). From the Walhalla Cave a few meters back and then to the right. Three decommissioned fire ladders allow us to climb to a wide path. On this path, turn left towards the marked ridge trail along the Lägern. It
