Between the mountains, the Walensee, over 15 kilometers long but only two kilometers wide, appears like a mighty fjord. Especially above the northern shore, the limestone walls of the Churfirsten rise steeply towards the sky. Walking the entire route between Walenstadt and Weesen (preferably in this direction!) is an appealing endeavor, perhaps the most attractive in the valley area of our region. Along the way, you only encounter proper promenades in certain sections, as typically expected by lake shores. The embedded cliffs impose two longer ascents on the route: the first right at the beginning, and the second behind Quinten up into the Seerenwald, where one can even experience a somewhat alpine touch. A small detour past the Seerenbach waterfall should not be missed. Speaking of Quinten: This small village, accessible only on foot or by boat halfway along the route, is considered the most picturesque spot with its surrounding vineyards—of course, also a top tourist magnet. Indeed, the Walensee hike is one of the most popular far and wide, although pleasure-oriented hikers often only walk parts of it (several boat docks offer flexibility). Respect to those who complete the entire route! And then you can enjoy the scenery once more from the lake perspective: the boat ride is essentially part of the Walensee experience ...
In Walenstadt, 424 m, we start on the wide lakeside path. After a few minutes, the longest ascent of the tour begins – leading us up about 400 meters on a forest road. At Frachtina, 808 m, where a trail from Walenstadtberg joins in, most of the climb is done. The forest road continues via Engen to Garadur, 828 m, before we lose all the gained altitude again on a forest trail, winding down numerous switchbacks to reach the lake shore at Josenhaab. Further traverses on natural paths lead via Gand and Schilt to the boat dock at Au, 438 m. From here, about one kilometer is walked on a promenade—partly carved out of the rock—to the best-known spot at Walensee, the picturesque Quinten, 433 m, where lively tourist activity often occurs. We ascend slightly again between houses and vineyards, keep left, and cross pleasantly until behind Laueli, before facing the most strenuous section. A partly rock-strewn trail climbs diagonally up steep slopes and is sometimes equipped with railings and a few

Mark Zahel
