Forest, Waalweg, and Wine in the Hartberg Region

On Madeira, they are called Levadas, channels that lead water from the rainy northern areas to the dry south. In South Tyrol, these artificially created irrigation channels are called Waale. Hikers in both destinations are enthusiastic about these popular, almost flat paths. It is all the more surprising that you can also hike along a Levada or Waalweg in Styria, even if it is just a short section. With the Waldsepplrunde, you get to know a quiet hiking area northwest of the town of Hartberg. The paths lead through beautiful mixed forests with partly old, gnarled beech trees, across well-maintained flower meadows, and past a few houses. From the height of the farm with the local name Waldseppl and the Gruber crossroads, there are beautiful views to the south towards the Hartberg region. On part of the trail, namely along the descent to the venue, you are also on the 27th stage of the northern route of the long-distance hiking trail "From Glacier to Wine," which runs from Pöllau to Hartberg. A good glass of wine and a regional snack at the Buschenschank and winery Pack are recommended as a nice finale.

From the municipal office in Penzendorf, 422 m, we hike up the asphalt road and turn right after a few meters towards the Pack winery/Buschenschank. At the end of the road, we go uphill through the vineyard via a flight of stairs (trail marking 2). To the right over the meadow, then we cross an asphalt road to continue hiking uphill through the forest. We reach a clearing and already see the Hartberg Ringwarte in front of us. At the next curve, we turn right and follow the markings to the intersection, 632 m, of hiking trails 2 and 8. We will reach this intersection again on the return journey. Now we go right and follow trail 8. Continuing along the forest roads, paying close attention to the markings at crossings. The path then descends, crossing the forest stream and then following the edge of the forest to a wayside shrine where there is a very original drink vending box. Turning right onto the asphalt road, we reach the small settlement of Staudach Fünfhöf, 663 m. We hike through
