Of the easy ascents to the Reiter Alm, the one via the »Saugasse« is among the less frequented, but by no means less interesting. The trail not only leads through one of the few remaining stone pine forests but also guides us through a gradually decaying alpine landscape with its quiet charms.
From the parking lot in Schwarzbachwacht first turn right, gently descending on a forest road through the forest westward (mark no. 470) to the start of the actual Wachterlsteig. Now steeply ascending in switchbacks to the ruined Lower Schwegelalm, 1160 m; then continuing to rise – to the right of the trail lies the Bärenkareck, which rises up to an elevation of 1730 m. Through a rare stone pine forest, we reach the gradually overgrown mountain meadows of the former Upper Schwegelalm, 1438 m. Now up and down over the undulating high plateau – to the left lies a hunting lodge –, then we cross the path from Schrecksattel to the former Upper Grünangeralm. Always keeping slightly left, we then reach the Neue Traunsteiner Hütte through the so-called Saugasse, calling it a hut is probably an understatement. The return is via the ascent route.
