Early historical and medieval buildings greet us on a tour through colorful chestnut forests to two of the most popular Palatinate wine villages. On the Eckkopf, where hikers are served food and drinks in the tower hut on weekends, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. The return route leads under gnarled oaks through the impressive Heidenlöcher complex.
From the station in Wachenheim we walk up Bahnhofstraße into the center of the cozy Wine Route town. The symbol of the Palatinate Wine Trail guides us after crossing the main road past the church through Burgstraße. We follow the signage and approach the impressive castle directly. After a few meters on the narrow footpath, we climb the sandstone steps on the right to the carefully restored Wachtenburg. The town's landmark was built in the 12th century by Conrad of Hohenstaufen. Due to severe damage during the Palatinate War of Succession, the complex was uninhabitable and, after several ownership changes, came into the possession of the town. In front on the terrace, we are offered a magnificent view of the town and the Rhine plain. Behind the castle, the Wine Trail ascends the steps on the right, and soon we are surrounded by an almost Mediterranean forest, intersected by overgrown former leisure plots on terraced slopes. At a barrier, we keep right following the signposting and hike

Albrecht Ritter
