This tour offers practically everything the High Tatras have to offer nature lovers: leisurely hiking through beautiful mountain valleys, beautiful alpine terrain with numerous streams and lakes, a relatively easy-to-reach summit with a panoramic view of the entire mountain range, and a short climbing adventure using chains and handholds on the nearly vertical rock sections below the Prielom Saddle. The Sliezsky dom mountain hotel and the classic Zbojnícka chata mountain hut also invite you to stop for a break—and all of this is in the immediate vicinity of “King” Gerlach—simply an irresistible must-do for every mountain enthusiast.
From Tatranská Polianka to Poľský hrebeň, we’ll follow the green trail markers. In the semi-open terrain of the lower, 6 km-long Velická dolina valley (Felker Valley), we’ll first follow the access road toward Sliezsky dom, with the Gerlachovský štít massif—the highest peak in the High Tatras—and its distinctive southern cirque almost always visible to our left. At the Velický most bridge (mountain hut), we cross the road for the last time and continue ascending through the forest, always following the beautiful Velický potok stream. Already in the mountain pine zone, we catch our first glimpse of the Sliezsky Dom mountain hotel, at 1,670 m, from Velická poľana.
