Vuokatti can rightly be called the Finnish mecca of Nordic skiing. Here you will find not only the first ski tunnel in Northern Europe, built in 1989, but also a colorful range of sports halls, ski jumps, training facilities, hotels, holiday cottages, and campsites. At the center of the landscape stands the 326 m high Vuokatinvaara, on the east side of which slopes and lifts for alpine skiing are located. However, the main interest here is cross-country skiing, for which a labyrinth of trails of all difficulty levels is available. In addition to countless routes and fitness paths, there are four hiking trails that are marked in different colors and run around the mountain or eastward from it. Here the 10 km long Sapporo Trail is presented, which was established in the early 1970s so Finnish cross-country skiers could train under optimal conditions: The course is meant to have a profile similar to the trails at the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo. The loop is extended with two detours to the lookout tower on Vuokatinvaara as well as to a rest hut.

We are in the high ropes course area and follow the path to the right. We walk along a lake, then on its north side along a forest path parallel to the main road Vuokatintie. Over a wooden staircase, we reach the access road to the ski lifts and campsites and turn right onto the paved sidewalk. Shortly after, the route turns left and runs as a path on the north side of the access road to the Kattikeskus. After crossing an access road coming from the main road, we continue briefly on the path, which then turns left over the large parking lot towards a ski slope. The marking posts guide us up along the western edge of the ski slope, starting the ascent to Vuokatinvaara. The path ascends
