Map Stara Planina, part 4 by Domino Verlag (Western Stara Planina from Berkovitsa to Zlatitsa / Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park). 1:50,000Roadbook
The starting point is located at the village square of Zgorigrad. To get there by bus from Vratsa. First, follow the road through the village further inland along the valley. Just outside the village, you pass a holiday settlement. At its end, in a hairpin bend, the red marked hiking trail leads uphill into the forest.
Now follows perhaps the most beautiful section of the path: wooden ladders lead steeply upward over platforms in the forest, shortly afterwards you reach a waterfall through which you can pass. At a small shelter, you come to the junction with the green marked path. Now, without major climbs, head westwards, initially still as a path, later as a forest road, to the Prshevitsa hut.
We had planned an overnight stay in the hut and had also reserved, but: the hut was closed. A call to the hut host revealed that he thought it was not worthwhile during the week. He then wanted to direct us to his second hut: about two hours away and located in a completely wrong direction for us. Therefore, we decided to carry out the originally planned two-day hike in one day.
The path continues always westwards along the red markers and the yellow-black poles on a path following the ridge. We skipped the Prshevitsa summit (clearly recognizable by the transmitter mast) for time reasons. Later, the path merges onto a forest road. Before it turns south, there is the option to switch to a path. However, this is only difficult to recognize. The forest road is also not a large detour.
Finally, you reach the village of Milanovo. From here, hitchhiking, bus (runs only rarely), or taxi down into the Iskar valley. Those who still have a lot of energy can also descend on foot. The entry point, however, is difficult to find between the farms.
