The diversity of animal and plant life is thanks to the farmers who mowed the meadows for centuries. When modern village-near farming methods made hay mowing in the valleys no longer worthwhile, spruce trees were planted there. Currently, efforts are underway in many places to restore the original floodplain vegetation. At many points along the hiking trail, the characteristic terrace formation is visible. It arises when a river is no longer able to transport its gravel load further and deposits it in the floodplain. If a river deepens again due to a climate change, it cuts through the previously built terrace. Their function as traffic routes was only acquired by the formerly swampy valleys of the Eifel after river regulation at the beginning of the 20th century. The trail leads through the valleys of the Bosselbach, the Richelsbach, the Kall, and the Tiefenbach.
