We will be quite amazed when, after all the steep ascent, we don't reach a distinct summit peak here at the top, but rather a plateau the size of a football field, adorned at its eastern edge with a small but magnificent summit cross. Truly the right place to pause, rest, and look reverently.
From the parking lot at the Kaiserhütte we proceed a short way down the valley on the road; soon a path branches off to the right, leading to the bridge over the Rißbach. Beyond that, we follow the path parallel to the Rißbach downstream. After the distinctive Sattelgraben, the trail to Vorderskopf branches right (clear red marking and sign). This leads steeply up into the mountain forest. We laboriously ascend on the narrow, albeit surprisingly well-marked path along the orographically right boundary ridge of the Sattelgraben, gaining significant height. Since this east-facing ascent is soon bathed in morning sun, an early start is strongly recommended to avoid becoming sweaty and exhausted on the numerous switchbacks. After about two hours, we will have completed a good part of our ascent and reached the hunting hut. A poor and mostly rather swampy path now leads out to the right to a clearing, across which we reach the saddle south below the Vorderskopf in a westerly direction.
