The hidden, secluded Vorderberghörnl is one of the quiet treasures in the core zone of Berchtesgaden National Park, overlooked by the Steinberge, as well as Hochkalter and Watzmann (south summit) and the peaks of the Reiteralm, while the Chiemgau Alps line up in the distance and the eye of the Hintersee glances up from the depths. The hike can become an unforgettable experience during the larch coloration period in October.
From the bus stop at the inn or mountain lodge Hirschbichl – also accessible from the Hintertal car park via the steep asphalt road in ¾ hour over the Hirschbichlpass – follow the road northeast down to a ditch. Here turn right towards the junction of the path from Bindalm and follow the wide trail to Mittereisalm. At the forest edge entering the Mittereis mountain basin, before the first of two huts, two paths branch off to the left. Here we do not follow the trail “Kammerlinghorn”, but take the second, unmarked but clearly visible path and hike in several loops through the forest up to the Hocheis service hut (clearing, rest area, fountain). Just beyond this the route splits; the right leads to Hocheisspitze, the left to Vorderberghörnl. The latter winds through light mountain forest onto a flat ridge. Over this we continue eastwards and down a rock ledge into the block and dwarf pine basin of the Totenlöcher, which can be surprisingly well crossed with skillful route finding. Behind
