It is hard to believe that just a good fifteen-minute walk from the southern edge of the Allgäu capital, which has over 70,000 inhabitants, the lively relief seeker shouting along can get lost in the forest. As a strict dividing line, the Heussring blocks off the Steufzgen settlement area against the immediately adjacent, dreamlike meadow floodplains. In one of the scattered forest islands, the Vorarlberg graves are hidden, which remind us of a time when Allgäu residents, French, and Vorarlbergers fought fiercely against each other.
From the main station in Kempten, 710 m, we follow the pedestrian paths signposted towards Stadtweiher along the ring road, which we cross on a crest via a pedestrian bridge. At a Nagelfluh field cross, the hiking trail heads toward Gersbühl across the flat meadowland towards the tower-crowned Grünten. We turn right onto the lane to the Adelharz district and after entering the forest, a spacious parking lot is marked by a second hiking sign "Vorarlberger Gräber" to show the further route. A gently ascending forest trail takes us to a hill. Beyond it, the forest opens up. There we come across the Vorarlberg graves, 760 m. A bench invites you to take a short rest. The fenced grave plot commemorates the 1809 insurgent Vorarlbergers who fell fighting against the French and Bavarians. Back then, the Iller district stretched, after Austria had already lost its dominance in southern Germany in the Peace of Pressburg three and a half years earlier, from Grönenbach to Montafon. At the following
