This natural spectacle is located in the approximately 100 m high cliff below the confluence of the Veľký and Malý Studený potok streams. The two streams flow through the valleys of the same name, Veľká and Malá Studená dolina, which together form the valley Studená dolina (Kohlbachtal) with the stream Studený potok (Kohlbach) over a total length of about 3.5 km up to the Cesta-Slobody road. The German word "Kohl" in the historic names derives from the rocky Prostredný hrot (Kahlberg), the highest peak on the ridge Prostredný hrebeň, which separates the mentioned valleys. In the pronunciation of the Zipser Saxons, it was also called "Kohlberg." The direct approach through this wonderfully scenic valley is more attractive than from Hrebienok or Tatranská Lomnica. The cascades are, of course, most effective at higher water levels.
From the TEŽ stop in Tatranská Lesná, the yellow trail marking leads us to the main road, then briefly right along it and before the Pension Karpatia left into the wooded valley Studená dolina. To the right, the Studený potok cascades down, along which we walk on a good hiking trail with only moderate ascent. After about 1 hour it becomes somewhat steeper uphill to the first large cataract of the Dlhý vodopád. Then follows the most attractive route section along many wild waterfalls and cascades up to the highest point of this natural spectacle. From the junction Vodopády Studeného potoka, following the blue and green markings, one reaches in 10 minutes, near the confluence of the Veľký and Malý Studený potok streams, the meadow Starolesnianska poľana with the oldest hut (built in 1863, restored in 1983) of the High Tatras, the Rainerova chata, 1300 m. Just above the hut, we reach the red marking of the Tatra-Magistrale; here turn left and in a comfortable traverse in just under 15
