The circular hike reaches a maximum height of just under 2100 m – not much for the Upper Engadine. Nevertheless, it leads to a magnificent viewpoint and is a good alternative destination if there is snow higher up due to a weather drop. At the highest point, the view sweeps across the rugged Morteratsch Glacier to the famous peaks of the Bernina Alps, from Piz Palü over Bellavista to Piz Bernina. The Piz Palü is a special eye-catcher, comparable to the Drei Zinnen in South Tyrol, a famous symbol for rock climbing.
Of course, this circular hike can also be started at any other points along the path.
We start from Morteratsch station, cross the train tracks and descend into the valley with little altitude gain. A path leads over roots and blocks through the forest to the junction of a side trail, which is somewhat rough over blocks to the viewpoint Chünetta. Return to the junction, then turn left and traverse through the forest descending to a comfortable hiking trail (to the right and somewhat lower a path for cyclists). At a fork, keep right and descend to Resgia (a district of Pontresina); here again right, over Bernina brook and road. At first fairly flat, then slightly rising valleyward to the mountain pass road, which is crossed to the famous viewpoint Montebello. Shortly on the road, then on the access road to Morteratsch station. The tour is somewhat shorter if you keep the left bank at the junction above Resgia. On a beautiful forest path past the “concert place” to Pontresina, which is reached near the large car parks by the train station. Return to Morteratsch by train.
