The Vertainspitze – a summit destination for hikers? When viewed from the Zaytal, one might hardly believe it, and anyway: the considerable height of more than three and a half thousand meters ... Yet in some maps, there is a red line through the Rosimtal up to the highest point. Personal investigation on site revealed the following: A path numbered 11 actually exists only up to the Rosimboden. Over the next 500 meters of elevation, the terrain still appears quite gentle; only near the glacier – which does not have to be crossed – does it become more challenging and in places somewhat tricky. Far above, a surprising terrace extends before the final section, which is marked by some uncertainties regarding the best route. Some prefer the ascent to the southeast ridge, but it might be somewhat easier to follow the (scattered) trail traces on the south face. In any case, a gigantic panorama opens at the summit, provided that any cumulus clouds are not faster than you. I was lucky with my day and was simply thrilled by the summit surroundings of the Zaytal, the white carpet of the Laaser Ferner, the famous triad over Sulden, and also distant horizons visible here...
We start advantageously in the inner area of Sulden and enter the slope at the Bäckmann monument. The decisive trail number is 11, which branches off from the access road to the right and first makes a few switchbacks in the forest and then in the area of a ski piste clearing. This is soon left behind again, and a beautiful forest path continues upwards on the left side of the Rosimtal. At the "Rastl," a connection splits off to Kanzel, before climbing an open slope and reaching the Rosimboden at 2439 m, keeping left. The junction of the Höhenweg from Kanzel now occurs somewhat higher, at around 2470 m. A few minutes further up, we pass a chamois sculpture and shortly after the junction of the currently abandoned original Ortler high route towards Schöntaufjoch (removed signpost). The designation with number 11 ends here, but the trail continues uphill with occasional yellow marks. In the upper Rosimtal, we stay more on the left side near the Rosim walls. The terrain steepens somewhat

Mark Zahel
