The Vaia Eagle is located on Monte Cucco (1387 m above sea level) in the Marcesina plain, a large plateau situated northeast of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni between the provinces of Vicenza and Trento. The Eagle is a wooden artwork created by the artist Marco Martalar. It is the largest wooden Eagle in Europe (measuring 6.5×5 meters).
How to reach it:
If you have a disability permit, you can take the forest road that goes up from Grigno (subject to permission from the municipality of Grigno).
Without a permit, the area can be reached by ascending from Enego, following signs for Enego/Marcesina.
The path we recommend for people with disabilities extends for about 1 km and starts from the parking area located after the junction for Malga Valcoperta di Sotto with a flat asphalt road (gradient < 6%) that leads to the dirt trail with an uneven surface climbing up to the artwork (230 m with a 12% slope).
Alternatively, it is possible to leave the car further uphill in Località Barricata near the war memorial chapel , in a parking area near the Rifugio Barricata (1351 m above sea level), and walk along a dirt road, with partly uneven surface (maximum gradient of 7%).
The path in this case is about 600 m long, to which the ascent paths leading to the artwork (described above) are added.
You can extend the path by about 4 km by visiting the woods of the Marcesina plain and skirting Monte Cucco where the Vaia Eagle stands; this path is mostly flat but has uneven and rough sections, without challenging slopes except for a short stretch (about 50 m with a 20% slope).
Along both described paths, there are no resting points or fountains. Near the refuge, a play area is being set up.
PARKING, REST AREAS AND TOILET FACILITIES
Besides the refuge parking area, it is possible to leave the car at two parking lots: the first near the refuge has a gravel and dirt surface, the second further downhill after the junction for Malga Valcoperta di Sotto.
For a rest or a good meal we suggest:
Rifugio Barricata – Località Barricata, 1 – 0461 171 6300
The refuge's structure is accessible and equipped with toilet facilities for people with disabilities (support handles on both sides of the toilet). Near Rifugio Barricata on the road surface there are two grids with tubular structures (maximum gap of 7 cm).
