The Taunus Nature Park (called Hochtaunus Nature Park until December 2012) is a nature park covering an area of 134,775 hectares (1,347.75 km²) in the Taunus mountain range. It is one of two Hessian nature parks in the Taunus and the second largest nature park in Hesse.
The Taunus Nature Park is located in the Hochtaunuskreis, Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Limburg-Weilburg district, Main-Taunus-Kreis, Wetteraukreis, as well as in the Gießen district. Where its borders are not identical with the external boundaries of its member municipalities, it is bounded on the west by the federal motorway 3, approximately on the north by the Lahn valley (but between Runkel and Weilburg it extends beyond the Lahn into the Westerwald), and on the east by federal motorway 5. In the south, it ends where the Main-Taunus Foreland begins between Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden. The park borders directly on the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park to the west.
The park primarily comprises the eastern half of the natural region known as High Taunus. Here runs the main Taunus ridge with the Großer Feldberg (881.5 m) as the highest Taunus peak. The park also includes the Eastern Hintertaunus north of this ridge, which is much larger in area. In addition, the narrow strip to the south of the ridge, called Vordertaunus, slopes down toward the Rhine-Main lowlands. The original park name as Hochtaunus Nature Park was therefore not entirely accurate.
