In Teesdale, the variety of landscapes, large and small waterfalls, lush blooms, and the typical white houses of Teesdale, which provide contrasting accents to the rich green, compete for the attention of hikers. None other than Alfred Wainwright, the North English hiking pope, writes: »Nothing more scenically beautiful than this part of the valley will be met… this is a walk of near perfection«.
We walk from the parking lot up the narrow paved road branching off the main road to a farm where it turns into a field path that winds uphill in switchbacks. With a gentler slope, we then hike nearly 1 km over several pastures to an unmarked but clearly visible crossroads. There we turn right onto the tractor track. If one of the following gates is locked, we must skillfully climb the wall sideways. Afterwards, the path gently descends and goes straight past a farm driveway. After a right turn, we reach a paved road and continue straight down. We follow it through several curves until shortly before passing a row of old beeches, where we turn left to a farm. Sabine Gilcher
