Selected alternatives for you

Especially for train enthusiasts: On this route, you will experience not only two World Heritage sites but also the fascination of the "Nassauische Kleinbahn".

The following highlights await on this approximately 12 kilometer long, culturally and historically varied circular route:

    - Limes palisade (reconstruction)

    - Former site of the Becheln small fort (information board + ground plan)

    - Former Roman watchtower (information board + ground plan)

    - View of Marksburg

    - Viaduct of the Kleinbahn with former bridge piers

    - Numerous information and anecdotes about the Kleinbahn on the information boards along the way

First, you follow the traces of the ancient Romans along the Limes near Becheln and admire the palisade reconstruction and numerous details about the former small fort and the watchtowers along the Roman-Germanic border. Afterwards, you leave the Roman era and start near the former Becheln station onto the old railway embankment of the Nassauische Kleinbahn near the Middle Rhine Valley. This once connected the route from Braubach via Becheln to Dachsenhausen and then on towards Nastätten and beyond. It transported miners with their products and tools uphill and downhill. Along the embankment, you will find numerous exciting information boards with facts and anecdotes from that time, and you can also enjoy a magnificent view of the Marksburg! Also very worth seeing is the old viaduct, where the Kleinbahn once crossed the Zollbach on a bridge. This sight definitely evokes a "lost place feeling". After a small climb, your path then leads you back to the start through the idyllic fields around Becheln.

From the parking lot of the community center (sports hall) in Becheln, start on a small staircase that leads northeast from the parking lot into the forest. At the end of this path awaits the Limes palisade and the further course of the Limes. You then follow the Limes through the forest in a southeasterly direction: along the Becheln sports field, over the K6, past the site of the former small fort and watchtower near Becheln. The path runs parallel to the K8. About 120m before the hiking trail merges onto the K8, you must turn right and cross it. From here, your path first heads south, then west, over the L333 onto the old railway embankment. Once on it, simply follow the wide path straight ahead. A small train symbol and numerous information signs show you that you are on the embankment; the path is easy to recognize. Occasionally, right-branching paths give you the option to return to Becheln early if you need to shorten (via airfield, Braubacherweg, sewage plant, etc.). If you want to follow the entire route, you should only follow the signage to Becheln AFTER passing the viaduct.

Along the way (see marked viewpoint on the map), you should leave the embankment a few steps to the west via a sharp turn, as from here you can get a magnificent view of the Marksburg after only about 30m (see photo). Continuing along the embankment, the next highlight is the viaduct! You must leave this on the right via the stairs and then make your way through its interior in a northwest direction. But first, enjoy the atmosphere here. After passing through the viaduct, keep heading northwest. A small staircase leads you up a well-developed gravel path back towards Becheln (signposted here). At the top of this path, continue on the paved path southwest. After about 200m, turn left onto a forest path. Through forest and field and past the field barn, you now head straight back to Becheln. After one last bench (also with views of the Rhine valley and the Marksburg), follow the paved path back to the starting point at the community center in Becheln.
