In 1999, the Way of St. James across Austria was provisionally marked for the first time with small larch signs; since 2011, there has been a permanent signage system from Purkersdorf heading west. The highlight of the first stage we’ll cover on this tour is the Troppberg, a classic Vienna Woods destination, “graced” by no fewer than two lookout towers: After the stone lookout tower from 1870 disappeared among the towering deciduous trees, a taller steel one was simply built next to it in 1991! Now we face the strenuous ascent to the Hochramberg, 459 m. At the top, at a fork, we follow the green-marked Adolf-Samper Trail to the right, which comes up from Purkersdorf and leads us over the Buchberg (428 m). Along the way, we see a few faded yellow paint marks or blue cardboard tags with a Hermes head. These are remnants of an attempt to permanently mark the 53-km-long Hermes Trail. Sandy ground accompanies hikers on their way to the Troppberg. The summit, with the Troppbergwarte lookout, lies slightly off the high-altitude trail, which continues toward Rekawinkel (alternative route). However, at the trail junction with the yellow trail
