Tips and suggestions
The name Bankräuber-Tour (Bench Robber Route) originated from a working group of the Heimatverein 1998 e.V Rieschweiler-Mühlbach that refurbished benches in the community. Attentive citizens noticed that benches seemed to disappear overnight. It quickly spread that diligent spirits were the robbers repairing, painting, or even renewing benches. The Bankräuber project now includes around one hundred benches, so it was obvious to connect them via hiking routes. Following the motto "one good idea leads to the next," the hiking network "Bankräuber-Touren" was created in Rieschweiler Mühlbach with seven hiking routes and different focuses. The “Sellemols” action with its rural scenes, captured on large photos at over 70 former farms, can be found in both districts. A separate route guide with explanations is available from the Heimatverein.
Roadbook
The starting point is the Rieschweiler train station. The circular route begins on An der Sperr street on the Pirminius bike and hiking trail (Hornbach – Hauenstein / 60 km) towards Thaleischweiler-Fröschen. Past the last houses on this street, after a sharp left turn, you reach a wooden bridge and cross the Schwarzbach stream here. Six benches invite you to rest along the bike path until its end. At the first bench, you get a beautiful view back to the Rieschweiler town center. Further benches follow along the bike path past the gymnastics club with its managed clubhouse, the tennis club with three courts, and the boule club with its hard court. After a sharp right turn, you encounter a large metal horse surrounded by old farming tools. Here you leave the bike path, cross the L477 road, and follow the ascent to the SG Rieschweiler sports facility. After passing the SG Rieschweiler clubhouse and the artificial turf field, you come past the natural monument “Thick Oak”, the dog club training ground, and the community’s grass sports field. From here, you can see the West Palatinate golf course. The paved path continues left along the golf course, then becomes a meadow path and ends at the forest. Now go left downhill to the next crossroads. Turn right to the fitness trail of the gymnastics club with 18 stations. You now walk parallel to the Sulzgraben on the left side to a hairpin bend, where you change sides and again have the Sulzgraben with Sulzbach on your left downstream. Looking down into the ditch, you can see and hear the idyllic brook flowing over rocks and stones, tree trunks, and bends. After a few meters, you reach the Trillerfels natural monument, to which a narrow path leads down. Over the years, water has drilled a hole through the rock and whirls down as a small waterfall. After this detour, continue downhill to a large crossroads. At a seating area, you can play a little tic-tac-toe or simply enjoy the wonderful nature and birdsong. Continue left along the brook. If you are lucky, you might observe a kingfisher here. At the end of the beautiful watercourse, you return to a residential area leading to the main street. Turn right and reach the Heart Bench. Here you can immortalize yourself on a large wall with a painted heart. Continue along the main street past several large photos with information panels showing rural scenes from former times, attached to former farms, from the “Sellemols” action of the local heritage association. In the town center at the roundabout, you can use the bookcase and then turn into Bahnhofstraße, the shopping street of Rieschweiler. Several dining options are available here before you return to the train station with its beautiful fountain square.
