From the Rifugio Averau, accessible in summer by the Fedare chairlift from Passo Giau, follow marker 440 north until the Sentiero delle Trincee (signposted, but without a marker) turns left.
Follow the path under the imposing Averau Group westward, until it meets the path with marker 441 which leads left (south), easily bringing you (from below the area seems inaccessible) to Forcella Averau.
From here, you almost arrive on flat ground again at Rifugio Averau, which offers a well-deserved refreshment break.
