Together with the Kaiserkopf and Tuxeck, the Treffauer forms the backdrop to the west of the Gruttenhütte. It is one of the highest and most panoramic peaks in the Kaiser Mountains and boasts magnificent scenery. It demands full concentration on the ascent and especially on the descent; even more so than the Sonneck.
To the right of the Jagerwirt, we walk along a small road (barrier) to a footbridge and behind it on a slight incline to the Wegscheid-Niederalm, which was destroyed by an avalanche. At the right-hand bend before the cattle shelter (well), we branch off from the road and walk straight ahead up to a footbridge on the Talbach stream. Immediately behind it, turn right and follow the snowy mountain pastures to the Wegscheid-Hochalm (Brunnen). From here, the path turns left through a belt of shrubs onto a terrace, where it meets the Wilder-Kaiser-Steig and follows it for about five minutes to the next fork to the left. Here and at the next fork in the path at the foot of a periodic waterfall, we keep to the right-hand track, which now struggles over a steep mountain pine slope to the entrance of the Schneekar.
