The contrasts could hardly be greater: eerie beautiful wolf howling in the Merzig Kammerforst and later breathtaking silence on the Kreuzberg in the Garden of Senses. In between, a varied route along shady forest paths, colorful flower meadows, and a section through an apple orchard. In addition, wide views over the Saar valley and the Merzig basin.
Varied forests with a deep brook notch, a landscape of hedges and scattered orchards, and of course the wolves of the world-famous wildlife enclosure make this route a special experience. Because of the wolves and the short distance, the route is also ideal for family outings.
At the Wolfspark in Kammerforst, slightly outside the district town of Merzig, Werner Freund (March 2, 1933 – February 9, 2014) established the first wolf enclosure in 1977. Werner Freund devoted over 30 years to behavioral research on wolves, became a "wolf among wolves," and was the lead wolf of the Merzig packs. Freund raised over 70 wolves in various wolf packs. The district town Merzig thus became known worldwide as the "City of Wolves."
The path starts immediately at the wolf enclosure through shaded mixed forest. It becomes dim through the Grätschlucht gorge. From the valley, 44 steps lead up over a tree ladder. Streams run through the slope, with primeval forest-like forest views everywhere you look.
The forest opens towards an old meadow orchard. The scent of meadow herbs and countless meadow flowers permeates the air. A dreamlike backdrop: countless spots of color shine out of the meadows, among them hedges and bushes. Later, the route runs right through an apple orchard.
In the "Garden of Senses," eleven garden rooms framed by hedges have been created on 15,000 sqm. Besides the extraordinary plant world, visitors find various thematic areas.
The Wolfsweg Merzig was certified with 65 points by the German Hiking Institute.

Attention:
Basically, entering the forest and walking the trails is at your own risk!
Seasonally and weather-dependent, increased surefootedness is required in some sections. Please wear clothing and hiking shoes adapted to the season and weather with appropriate tread. Be cautious of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong winds and in winter due to snow and ice, the danger increases from falling trees and branches.
Dear hikers with dogs,
For the wolves’ welfare, a section of the wolf trail inside the Wolfspark is not permitted for hikers/visitors with dogs to pass through. Please follow the marked detour route of the wolf trail when the park is closed. Alternatively, you can continue your path along the fence (signposted). Thank you for your understanding!

Roadbook
After starting at the information board, we follow the path along the wolf enclosures towards the south. After a short distance, we turn for the first time into a forest path section and then cross the federal highway.
Further south, ascend the paved forest path towards the barracks. At about kilometer 2.5, we turn right onto a path and cross the ridge in this forest area. Several crossings of the small, romantically wild brook are included via bridges and footbridges.
Now the path runs over open fields and meadow areas up to the fruit orchards. Then turn right onto a paved road. Here it goes along fields (and a covered resting place with a panoramic view) to the southernmost point, the Gardens of the Senses. And actually, this is not a garden in the usual sense, but more a fascinating world of the most diverse colors, shapes, and scents. Here is also about half of the route length reached.
Now continue north towards the barracks. On the right-hand side of the barracks, walk over the meadow into the forest and down a forest path to the federal highway. After crossing it, the path continues in the Wolfspark area until the path turns sharply left one last time and leads us back to the starting point.
