Our route offers an adventure for the whole family and is ideal for families with children from 12 years old. Inspired by Gisela Schinzel-Penth, we accompany the hikers with spooky ghost stories on their way from Gaißach to Bad Tölz.

With eerie audio files, you explore the mystical legends of the Tölzer Land and can discover on your way the castle ghost of Reichersbeuern, the restless mill ghost, the moor woman, or souls wandering in the dense thickets of the forests. Even the bravest adventurers get goosebumps.

At midday, the Bachkapellenhof offers an ideal place to rest. Through traditional Bavarian cuisine, you can regain energy and enjoy a decent meal. After crossing the Ellbachmoor, you reach the farm shop of Martin Johann Sappl. Here you can find freshly smoked fish from his own spring water ponds. Once you have reached the end of the route, give your tired legs some relaxation in the cool water of the Eichmühle natural outdoor pool.

    Author’s recommendation

The best chances to see ghosts are at dusk in the evening. Therefore, a promising start time is between 12 and 3 pm depending on the season.

    Safety information

The route runs along Sachsenkamer Straße (about 1.2 km), which has no sidewalk. In this section, you should keep close to the edge of the road and watch out for cars.

    Tips and suggestions

The Ellbach and Kirchsee moors are located in a nature reserve and are also a fauna-flora habitat area. Likewise, the Attenloher Filzen and Mariensteiner moors are fauna-flora habitat areas. Please observe the local guidelines for nature protection. Make sure to stay on the hiking trails, avoid noise, do not leave any garbage, and treat nature respectfully. #naturebeginswithyou

Since parts of the hiking route lie in the moorland, it is recommended not to plan the route after heavy rainfall, as the paths can be very muddy.

    Roadbook

The route starts at Gaißach station, here you walk east along Bahnhofstraße towards the Gaißach community. After about 350 meters, turn right into Ostfeldstraße, which you follow until the end. After another 700 meters you reach a fork, here keep left and hike towards Greiling on the gravel and natural path "Filzen Rundweg" between Hochfilzen and the Wirtwiese (chapter 1: Welcome hiker). Here you enjoy the splendid view of the green landscape with the impressive mountains in the background. You must always keep left. After about 1.4 km you cross the small Gaißach and after 1.7 km the Große Gaißach. Here, small bridges lead you over the stream. After the first 2 km keep right for the first time to continue on the way to Reichersbeuern and not return to Gaißach. On your way along the Attenloher Filzen, you can discover a mill to your right (chapter 2: Restless mill ghost). From the mill, walk straight up the alley and take the right field path at the next fork. Once you are back on Lohwiesen street, a small underpass leads you under the B472 (chapter 3: Outcast souls).

Then turn right onto Mühlreiterweg. Once you reach the intersection with Sonnental street, turn right again and follow it until Schererweg branches off to the right. When you reach Tegernseer Straße, turn right and follow it to Ötzstraße, into which you turn left. On your left is the Bachkapellenhof, where you can enjoy traditional Bavarian cuisine. After you have regained strength, continue your way and follow Lindenweg, which is on the opposite side of Tegernseer Straße. At the next intersection after about a hundred meters, on the right-hand side there is a natural path. Follow this, passing by the mill pond, until you come straight to Reichersbeuern castle (chapter 4: castle ghost).

To the northwest, Schloßweg leads through the grounds past horse paddocks. As Schloßweg turns right, continue straight on the gravel path until you reach Sachsenkamer Straße (Töl 13), here turn left. On this main road it is important to stay close to the edge and watch for cars. It is advisable to wear a safety vest on this section and walk on the left side of the road to keep traffic in sight at all times. After 1.2 km you have made it and cross the B13. Slightly offset to the right, you can see a natural path that leads you back through the beautiful meadows and forests to Ellbach.

First, always take the left path at all forks. After crossing an intersection, turn right at the next opportunity. Follow the path until a footpath can be seen on the left. The path appears sporadic and is not paved. From here, it goes about 180 m through the undergrowth (chapter 5: dark path). Watch out for branches and uneven ground here. The path finally leads into a large green meadow, where vehicle tracks of a tractor can be seen. Follow these tracks until you reach a right curve. Here the tracks end and a path leads you again through the undergrowth. Follow this path straight until you see a dead-end sign on the left. Before the sign, turn right and follow the forest path. At all forks, you must always keep left. A large meadow appears to your left, the northern end of Ellbachmoor. The path finally leads you further to Ellbach.

Arriving in Ellbach, you reach Birkenstraße straight ahead, which you follow until you can turn left onto Reutbergstraße. Once you reach Tölzer Straße (St2368), turn left and follow it for about 100 meters until you can take the left turn into Bachstraße. At the turn, keep left and walk along Bachstraße to its end. At this point begins the gravel path that leads you through the wonderful nature reserve, the Ellbachmoor, and you can enjoy the view of the moor landscape (chapter 6: moor woman). Please observe the local guidelines for nature protection. Make sure to stay on the hiking trails, avoid noise, do not leave any garbage, and treat nature respectfully. #naturebeginswithyou

After a good kilometer, you reach the spring water ponds of Martin Johann Sappl, where his fish grow up. At the next intersection, keep left if you want to buy or immediately eat one of his delicious fish. For this, follow the path until you can turn right onto Obermühlberg street. At the end of this street, you reach his farm shop Sappl am Mühlberg.

After you have done your shopping, return to the intersection where you should keep left and continue straight ahead. Follow this path; it leads you past the tracks of the Bavarian Oberland Railway to the Eichmühle natural outdoor pool, where you can offer your legs relaxation in the cool water. For your return to Bad Tölz station, follow Eichmühlstraße until the first opportunity to turn right onto an asphalted street. This is immediately after the second parking lot you find here, which is on your right. The street is close to the clothing store Zeitgeist Barbara Förtsch. At the end of the street, turn right for the first time and then immediately follow the natural path on your left. If you follow this to its end, you reach Eichenstraße, which you walk along. After 300 meters, turn left into Eisenbergerstraße. This leads you directly to Bad Tölz station, where you can conveniently board the train back to Munich.
