Torrox Costa Circular #2

This walk begins and ends at the lighthouse at the eastern end of Torrox Costa and avoids the need to walk through any plantations.

Start by taking the GR249 route along the beach for a distance of under 2km and then take aleft to cross the main road.

Follow the urban roads up through Las Flores, El Penoncillo and finally Avenida Los Poetas.

Continue up Avenida Los Poetas where there are houses on the right until a fork in the road is reached.

Turn left at this point and head towards the communications masts.  

With the masts on your left follow the track as it goes around the hill.  There are excellent sea views from here.

At the other side of the hill there is a house on the left and a track on the right with a chain across to stop vehicles.  Step over the chain if it is in place and follow the track down through this plantation until a larger dirt road is reached.

This road goes around the hillside and crosses the tunnel of the Autovia del Mediterraneo.  A short distance after crossing the tunnel the route takes a sharp turn to the left and goes uphill past a large power pylon.  Once over the top, follow the track down and to the right.  It is quite rough for some time but it eventually becomes a surfaced urban road.  

There are no houses here, just the road, pavements, street lights and other services.  This is an urban development that hardly got started and it is quite fascinating to see.  (On a recent visit in 2019 it was noted that some construction work had started).  At the roundabout at the bottom of this street keep left and follow the road round and under the autovia.  At this point the fence ends and the route takes a sharp right turn on to a dirt path that goes down into the gorge.  Follow this to the bottom where you will cross a Roman bridge and then climb steeply up the other side.

When the top is reached (almost under the autovia at the other side) it is possible to visit Torrox Pueblo if time allows.  It has a very pretty town square with lots of outdoor seating and cafes.

Continue the walk by passing under the autovia and follow the track all the way to a bridge in Torrox Costa.  Cross the bridge and follow the track all the way back to the start point.
