Portbou is a historically significant town on the Costa Brava near the Spanish border with France. After the Peace of the Pyrenees, the connection between the two countries was initially ensured through rail traffic, and during the National Socialist era, Portbou was a gathering point for German and French refugees. Even today, the "Ruta Walter Benjamin" follows the path used by the escape helpers Lisa and Hans Fittko during the National Socialist era between the French Banyuls-sur-Mer and Portbou. The route is named after the German philosopher who died in Portbou in 1940. On our hike, we discover not only the historic town, the breathtaking Costa Brava, and a part of the escape route but also climb the panoramic Puig de Querroig with a medieval ruin. The path to it runs consistently along the Spanish-French border.
